Custom Door Colours: Using RAL References Without Relying on a Screen

A RAL number is a useful shared reference, but final colour and surface appearance should be approved on the selected material and finish system.

When a door is made to order, colour is part of the specification. A RAL code gives the buyer, designer and supplier a common starting reference. It does not mean that a website swatch or phone display is a final colour sample.

The 12 online swatches are examples

Our colour guide shows 12 familiar RAL references to make early discussion easier. They are not the full range of available colours. You can provide another RAL number, a physical sample or a project-specific colour brief. The available finish still needs to be confirmed for your selected door and surface.

Why screens can disagree

Displays, brightness, camera lighting and image editing can change the appearance of a colour. The surface underneath also matters: a smooth panel, a textured relief and a metallic finish can look different even when the colour reference is the same. A digital image therefore helps shortlist a direction; it should not be the only approval evidence.

A clear approval sequence

  1. Identify the product series, reference design and intended door location.
  2. Send the desired RAL number or another colour reference, together with the preferred surface finish.
  3. Ask which coating or finish system is proposed for that door construction.
  4. Review a representative physical sample under suitable lighting and record its approval.
  5. Confirm the final drawing and written order specification before production.

For repeat and project orders

Use one colour and finish schedule for all openings, and mark any exceptions clearly. If different door series are being sourced together, ask for separate samples when their materials or finish systems differ. Keep an approved reference with the order record so later batches can be compared against it.

Our quotation checklist helps you verify that colour, construction, hardware and delivery scope are all recorded together.
